Chapter 5 Exercise 1

It is clear that when Julie Charlip uses phrases like "Mark and Engels wrote:", and describes the time she asked a sociology professor what he thought about classes, she is refering to other peoples views. Then, when she say things like, "I find myself not knowing what class I'm from", and "I seek the answers to these questions in the specificity of my past", she is clearly displaying her own thoughts and ideas.

Chapter 4 Exercise 1

I believe that Jean Anyon both agrees and disagrees with Bowles, Gintis, Basil Bernstein, Pierre Bourdieu, and Michael W Apple. I believe this because she goes on to support both ideas supported by these men and says that in her article she offers she offers tentative empirical support of these ideas. She agrees with these men but wants to further expand their investigation onto elementary and secondary schools.

7.j

This paper reminds me of a newspaper. The two colomns per page and the large bold title with the pictures definately make it easier to read and it looks more professional as well. Personally, I would think that this would be more readily accepted as a soucre of information since we are so accustomed to reading newspapers and such. If we took away the pictures and made it look more like a report, then many people would instantly lose their interest in the topic and not care about what it says simply because of the unpleasing format.

Persepolis Movie Review

The second Persepolis starts you feel like you are in a real life comic book. It all starts with color scheme. The entire movie is in black and white which leads the viewer to form a more cut and dry opinion of the events happening in the Iranian Revolution. Furthermore, this color scheme further exemplifies the fact that this movie is based on the memoir of Marjane Satrapi, a little girl who grew up during the Iranian Revolution.
The language in which Persepolis is filmed in also aids the perception of a comic book. Since it is a foreign film and all of the voiceovers are done in French, it is necessary to utilize English subtitles. However, when viewing Persepolis with English subtitles, it becomes easier to follow along because you are now reading along like a comic book. The French voices in the background also exemplify the tone of the words you’re reading and provide a pleasant ambiance.
This ambiance is further intensified by the ingenious usage of music in the background. You only hear the music during laid back shots where you get a feel for the scenery, but during conversations and dense parts of the film the music is unnoticeable. This allows the viewer to focus on the dialogue and pay attention to what is going on in Iran.
All in all, I believe that Persepolis is an outstanding film that truly captures the intense torment and disturbing display of humanity in Iran. We can all learn a lot about the Iranian Revolution from this film and it is extremely simple to process as well.

Eisner and McCloud Responses

The essay by Eisner ws ver enlightining and tought me a lot about comic books and graphic novels. I have never read a comic book or graphic novel before so I have no idea how to read them. Actually, the closest thing I've read to a comic book and a graphic novel is the sunday comics. So needless to say, I learned a lot from readin this paper. For example, I never would have guessed that the size of the boxes can impact the story. Then there was the McCloud paper which was actually written by a comic book. This helpe me a lot because I kinda got a feel for reading a comic book while learning about comic books. From what I've learned about comic books I can't wait to start reading one because it looks like it would be much better than an actual book.

4.m

When I have to write an essay, I usually start out by getting something to eat. This is because I can't think on an empty stomach and therefore, need to have something to eat in order to concentrate on my essay. After I have fulfilled my hunger, I turn on a little ambient music, and then just start typing. I try to stop as little as possible and just go with the flow. When I reach the end, I take a break and do something else to take my mind off of my essay. Later that day or some day in the future, I would come back and reread the paper and make any adjustments that I need to make before I go over it with my classmates. Then I fix what needs to be fixed and hand in the final to be graded.
This strategy has always worked out in the end for me as I have never received a grade lower than what I think I deserve. What I find most unhelpful about my writing process is that sometimes I can't just plow through it and when I stop to fix a little part I lose focus on the essay as a whole. So as long as I run through the essay and let my ideas flow, it all works out alright.

Workshopping Homework

Workshopping is something you do when you need to revise your new paper. It's where you take your first ideas of the paper and throw them around with other people and come out with something more like the finished project you are aiming for. Or, atleast you have some new ideas on how to get there. The great thing about workshopping is that you get to go back and change whatever you need to in your paper and there are other people there that ill make sure it makes sense.
For essay R I would be very motivated to help workshop because he has some very good points and with a little help with his grammer and some advice his works cited and support, he could have come out with a great paper. This is why workshop is so important. This guy could have gotten an A but instead we have decided to giive him a C. I fhe only did some workshopping his grade would have been much higher.

Response to Essay R

All in all, I would give Essay R a grade of a C. The general concept of the essay was fairly well developed, but there were many grammatical errors. For example, in the second sentence, the author means to ask a question to the reader, but the sentence is not finished with a question mark. Instances like this occur throughout the essay and could have been easily corrected through proofreading. The author also changes from third person to first person and offers many personal opinions which should not be included in the essay.

Although all of his claims and points are made somewhat clearly, he doesn’t have a lot of support and has only one source which could be bias. He needs to get more sources to eliminate this bias and then start to get away from using 1st person and his own opinions on wrestling.
